Individual differences in behavioural and physiological responses to challenges are progressively accepted as adaptive variation and reveal a strong degree of evolutionary conservation throughout the vertebrate taxa. Previous studies in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) suggested that individual differences in behaviour reflect distinct coping styles or personality, contrasting consistent traits associations. Consumption vs. deposition of essential fatty acids in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae fed semi-purified diets ArchiMer

Semi-purified diets were used to feed gilthead sea bream larvae as first food from mouth opening until day 17. Four diets were formulated on the basis of a previous one used as control (D1). Three experimental diets differed only by the lipids added. One diet contained n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) plus arachidonic acid (D2), one diet n-3 HUFA without arachidonic acid (D3) and one diet without n-3 and n-6 HUFA (D4). Effect of dietary phospholipid level on the development of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae fed a compound diet ArchiMer

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of dietary phospholipid (PL) levels on survival and development of first feeding gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae. Larvae were fed from day 4 to 23 posthatching with an isoproteic and isolipidic formulated diet with graded levels of PL from 90-150 g kg(-1) dry matter (DM). A dietary PL content of more than 90 g kg(-1) DM seems to be necessary for sustaining growth of first feeding sea bream larvae. Etude expérimentale de la prédation de la palourde japonaise, Ruditapes philippinarum, par la dorade royale, Sparus aurata, et le baliste, Balistes capriscus ArchiMer

Depuis 1988, d'importantes mortalités de palourdes japonaises Ruditapes philippinarum ont été enregistrées, sur de nombreux élevages, dans le bassin d'Arcachon. Pour expliquer celles-ci, l'hypothèse d'une prédation par la dorade royale Sparus aurata et par le baliste Balistes capriscus était avancée. Afin de la vérifier, une étude expérimentale de la prédation de la palourde par ces deux poissons a été réalisée en laboratoire. Si les relations taille prédateurs-taille proies sont plus marquées chez le baliste, les deux espèces sont particulièrement voraces, puisqu'elles s'avéraient capables de consommer, en 24 h, 500 petits naissains et 350 jeunes palourdes de 25 mm de longueur, 50 % à 70 % des proies étant consommés au cours des 6 premières heures....

Flow cytometric determination of genome size in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), thinlip mullet (Liza ramada), and European eel (Anguilla anguilla) ArchiMer

The nuclear DNA content in Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus aurata, Liza ramada, and Anguilla anguilla, was measured by flow cytometric analysis. Male human leukocytes were used as internal reference cells. Nucleated fish erythrocytes were stained simultaneously to human leukocytes with a staining buffer containing propidium iodide (PI). Nuclear DNA contents of target species were estimated in relation to an assigned value of 7.0 pg DNA for male human leukocytes. A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells.

Problems related to the lack of functional swimbladder in intensive rearing of the seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and the sea bream Sparus auratus . ArchiMer

The primordial inflation of swimbladder normally occurs at a size of 4 to 5 mm in sea bream Sparus auratus and 5 to 6 mm in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax . However, in intensive larval rearing conditions, lack of inflation is often observed and leads to the production of up to 80% of postlarvae whose swimbladder is not functional. They are, on the average, 20-30% smaller in weight than normal fry. Their survival rate can also be reduced by any kind of stress such as weaning, handling or hypoxic conditions. It is suggested that the selective mortality which affects the abnormal fish results both from a decrease in predatory efficiency and an increase in energetic needs.

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). This study describes the variability of important quality traits in gilthead sea bream produced under intensive conditions in Southern Europe and purchased in a French market (Nantes). Chemical, sensory and histological characteristics were performed on 18 samples delivered over a year.
